Great Shinobi Owl
The father who raised a wolf, only to become the hunter in his own den.
The Great Shinobi Owl is the shinobi who adopted a nameless orphan, named him "Wolf," and trained him in his ways. He later faked his own death during a raid on Kuro's home three years before the main events, and was revealed to be the one who fatally stabbed Wolf after Wolf defeated Lady Butterfly. Owl seeks the Dragon's Heritage for himself, and depending on the player's choice, he can be fought and killed by Wolf, or Wolf can obey him and trigger the Shura ending, where Wolf kills Emma, Isshin, and eventually Owl himself.

Lore & Background
Owl's history is tied to the Ashina clan and the Dragon's Heritage. He adopted the orphan Wolf and trained him as a shinobi, later entrusting him with safeguarding young lord Kuro, the last of the Dragon's Heritage line. Three years before the game's events, during a bandit raid on Kuro's home led by Lady Butterfly, Owl apparently died. However, he had faked his death and was the unknown assailant who fatally stabbed Wolf after Wolf defeated Lady Butterfly. Owl survived by using the Sediment from the Rejuvenating Waters to gain corrupted immortality. In the present, he confronts Wolf and demands loyalty, offering him a choice: renounce Kuro and join him, or refuse and fight. If Wolf refuses, Owl fights him in combat and is killed. If Wolf obeys, Owl orders him to kill Emma and Isshin, and later Wolf kills Owl as well, corrupted by bloodlust.
In Their Own Story
The rain fell heavily on the wooden walkways of Ashina Castle, masking the sound of approaching footsteps. The Wolf stood before the great doors of the Owl's Sanctum, his heart heavy with a dawning realization. Inside, he could hear the faint clinking of metal as his master prepared for battle. It was not the gentle guidance of a teacher, but the cold readiness of an executioner. "I did this for you," Owl's voice echoed from the shadows, calm and resolute. "To save us all." The Wolf tightened his grip on the katana, knowing that to win meant breaking the only family he had ever known. The air grew thick with tension as the lanterns flickered, casting long, dancing shadows of two masters about to clash in a dance of steel and sorrow.
Reader's Guide
Owl's backstory is rooted in his service to the Ashina clan, where he rose to become a legendary shinobi before taking on the role of a father figure. His combat style is a masterclass in fluidity and aggression, utilizing dual katanas that allow him to strike with incredible speed and precision. In battle, he employs a mix of swift slashes and powerful thrusts, often chaining attacks together to overwhelm opponents. He frequently uses his shinobi prosthetics, such as firecrackers or smoke bombs, to create openings or disorient the enemy. His posture is difficult to break due to his high resilience, requiring players to master deflection timing. Narratively, Owl represents the tragedy of a man who believes he must sacrifice everything for the greater good. He forces the protagonist to question the nature of duty and whether the ends ever justify the means. Defeating him is not just a physical challenge but an emotional climax that determines the fate of Ashina.
