Isshin Ashina is the leader of the Ashina clan, which seized a land rich in divine favor during the late Sengoku period. Two decades after Wolf's childhood, Isshin is on his deathbed, with Ashina besieged by the Interior Ministry. Disagreeing with Genichiro's plan to use Kuro's blood for an immortal army, Isshin has Emma warn Wolf so the two can flee. After Wolf defeats Genichiro in a second duel, Genichiro escapes using corrupted immortality from the Rejuvenating Waters' Sediment. Later, when Wolf returns from the divine realm after obtaining the final ritual ingredient from the Divine Dragon, he discovers Isshin has passed and Ashina is under attack by the Interior Ministry's troops, who have set fire to the castle with rockets and flamethrowers. Fighting through the burning castle, Wolf finds Kuro under attack by Genichiro, who has retrieved another Mortal Blade. Upon defeat, Genichiro sacrifices himself using the second Mortal Blade to revive Isshin in his prime so he might restore Ashina—a wish that Isshin attempts to honor despite disagreeing with it. Wolf then kills Isshin in combat.

The air in Ashina Castle is thick with smoke and the roar of flames as the Interior Ministry's troops press their attack. An old man lies on his deathbed, his breathing shallow, his eyes closed. But when Genichiro, desperate and defeated, draws the second Mortal Blade and drives it through his own chest, the air changes. Isshin Ashina rises—not as the frail elder who passed moments ago, but in his prime, the Sword Saint reborn. He takes up his blade, spear, and gun, and faces Wolf in a final, climactic duel. 'Come, Sekiro,' he says, his voice carrying the weight of a legend. 'Let us see if your resolve matches your skill.'

Reader's Guide

Isshin Ashina is the final boss of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, encountered in the burning Ashina Castle after Wolf returns from the divine realm. He appears in two forms: the elderly Isshin Ashina (who has already passed away before the fight) and the Sword Saint Isshin, resurrected by Genichiro's sacrifice using the second Mortal Blade. The Sword Saint fight is the game's ultimate challenge, requiring mastery of deflection, posture management, and prosthetic tools. Isshin uses a katana, a spear, and a gun, combining rapid sword strikes with sweeping spear attacks and gunfire. His phases include a first phase with his katana, a second phase where he adds the spear and gun, and a third phase with lightning attacks that can be reversed. Defeating him is required for the Immortal Severance, Purification, and Return endings, but not for the Shura ending, where Wolf instead kills Emma and Isshin (the elderly version) before becoming corrupted.
