Owl is a wandering shinobi who adopts a nameless orphan, names him "Wolf," and trains him. He later entrusts Wolf with protecting Kuro, the last of the Dragon's Heritage line. Three years before the game's events, Kuro's home is raided by bandits led by Lady Butterfly, and Owl is believed dead. In truth, Owl faked his death to pursue the Dragon's Heritage, and he is the one who fatally stabbed Wolf after Wolf defeated Lady Butterfly. Wolf only survived because Kuro shared his blood with him. Later, after Wolf collects most of the ritual elements for the Immortal Severance, Owl confronts him. If Wolf renounces his loyalty to Kuro on Owl's orders, he fights and kills Emma and Isshin while Owl kills Genichiro, but Wolf then becomes corrupted by bloodlust and kills Owl as well, leading to the Shura ending. If Wolf refuses, he kills Owl in combat.

Three years before the main events, Kuro's home is raided by bandits led by the shinobi Lady Butterfly, leading to Owl's apparent death. While Wolf defeated Lady Butterfly, he was fatally stabbed by an unknown assailant—later revealed to be Owl, who faked his death in pursuit of the Dragon's Heritage. Wolf only survived after Kuro shared his blood with him. Later, after Wolf collects most of the ritual elements for the Immortal Severance, Owl confronts him. If Wolf renounces his loyalty to Kuro on Owl's orders, he fights and kills Emma and Isshin while Owl kills Genichiro, but Wolf then becomes corrupted by bloodlust and kills Owl as well, leading to the Shura ending.
