The guardians operate in silence, understanding that Kuro's existence is both a blessing and a curse to the world. Emma, trained by Isshin, acts as his private physician and warns Wolf so the two can flee when Genichiro seeks Kuro to use his blood to create an immortal army. Wolf serves as his direct shadow, bound by oath rather than blood—Owl entrusted him with safeguarding the young lord Kuro, the last of the Dragon's Heritage line. Their loyalty is tested when the Ashina Clan fractures; Owl, who faked his death in pursuit of the Dragon's Heritage, reveals he was the one who stabbed Wolf three years ago. Genichiro desires the immortality for himself, using the Sediment from the Rejuvenating Waters to gain corrupted immortality. The guardians must choose between their duty to the clan and their duty to the boy's soul. This protection extends beyond physical safety into spiritual preservation. They are acutely aware that the Dragon's Heritage is a poison disguised as salvation. By keeping Kuro hidden, they delay the inevitable conflict that his existence provokes among warlords and assassins. Their actions define the moral core of the story, contrasting sharply with the ambition-driven motives of their enemies.

Rain slicked the wooden walkways of Ashina Castle. Wolf stood motionless, his prosthetic arm gleaming faintly in the moonlight. Behind him, Kuro slept, unaware of the assassins circling like wolves. Emma moved through the mist above, her blade sheathed but ready. They were not fighting for a lord or land tonight. They fought for the breath in the boy's lungs. A twig snapped below. Wolf did not turn; he simply drew his katana, the steel singing softly against the rain.
